One in five cases of COVID-19 occurring from outbreaks in BC’s long-term care or assisted living facilities was fatal.

The information was collected by the BC Centre for Disease Control using data from July 9, when BC had 183 deaths and 2,978 total cases recorded. This shows a case fatality rate of 6.1 per cent.

“We know that in some situations (COVID-19) is much more dangerous and much more lethal,” said Henry.

The case fatality rate in long-term care or assisted living facilities is a staggering 20.2 per cent. One hundred and nine people died of the 539 who were infected.

“This is one of the reasons why we have put so much time and energy into trying to protect our long term care homes and our elders and seniors in those situations,” said Henry.

In acute care outbreaks, 98 cases were recorded and 22 people died, representing a 22.4 per cent case fatality rate.

“Again, it’s a very highly lethal situation, because we know that people in hospitals, particularly in ICU, are people who have other underlying illnesses that put them at risk of having severe disease if they catch COVID as well,” said Henry.

In comparison, non-outbreak cases numbered 1,950, but only 50 of those people died. The non-outbreak case fatality rate was only 2.6 per cent—still higher than with influenza, said Henry, but lower than other scenarios.
